Reclaimed Water Service

Reclaimed Water

Most people take it for granted that there will always be enough water. Every time we turn on the tap or a sprinkler, water flows without interruption. The reality for California is that there is not enough water for everyone. The State of California and our own region are dealing with a growing population, stricter environmental constraints on how water can be used and periodic droughts that curtail the unlimited use of our water supply.

To save drinking water for other uses, the City of Corona has completed the construction of a reclaimed water distribution system. Reclaimed water is high quality water that has been re-purified and disinfected in the City's own water reclamation facilities and is used for various landscaping irrigation. It will allow the City to save drinking water for homes and businesses.

In the past year, the City has made substantial progress with its reclaimed water project and has been serving reclaimed water to customers since the summer of 2006. We currently serve 119 connections that use 1.4 million gallons per day on average, with many more sites preparing to be converted.

The City of Corona's infrastructure for the reclaimed water program consists of approximately 27 miles of pipeline, three storage reservoirs and three pump stations. Reclaimed water has its own system of pipelines that is completely separate from drinking water lines. These pipelines are colored purple to easily distinguish them from potable, or drinking, water systems.

The reclaimed water system produces approximately six million gallons of reclaimed water per day. This water is then used for the irrigation of golf courses, local parks, landscape maintenance districts, schools and freeway landscaping. As a direct result, it significantly reduces the use of our vital resource - potable water.

Hundreds of communities in California and around the nation are also using reclaimed water. In the City of Irvine, reclaimed water has been used for the past 35 years.
