Questions and Answers

May I submit a resume instead of an application?

No.  You must submit a completed and signed City application.  You may submit a resume and/or cover letter in addition to your application if desired.  However, do not write "see resume" on the application if you choose to submit additional materials.  The application must be fully completed with no blank spaces and must be able to stand alone.  Only current employees may submit a resume in lieu of an application.

Can I apply online?

Yes.  You will receive a confirmation number once you have submitted your application.
NOTE: Some positions will not allow you to apply online.

If I am interested in a particular position, but I do not see an opening for it, can I turn in an application anyway?

No. We can only accept applications for positions that are currently open. If you are interested in a job for which there is no opening you may fill out an Interest Card. When an opening becomes available, we will send the card to you so you can apply. Interest cards are kept on file for one year and are available in the Human Resources Department.

May I apply for two positions for which I feel I am qualified?

Yes.  You may apply for more than one position at a time.  However, you will need to fill out a separate, original City application for each position.

How will I find out the status of my application?

The Human Resources Department will notify each applicant in writing about the status of his or her application after the closing date of the position.

May I fax my application?

No.  Only original documents are valid.  We will not accept faxes, photocopies or scanned applications.

Is it ok to mail my application on the closing date?

Postmarks are not accepted. Human Resources must receive applications by 5:30 p.m. on the closing date.  Each application will be time stamped upon receipt.  In order to be fair to all applicants, we cannot make any exceptions to this rule.

How do interviews work at the City of Corona?

Once a position closes, a Human Resources Analyst and the hiring department will review all applications.  Since the number of interview slots are limited, only the most qualified applicants can be selected.  That is, an applicant who meets all of the minimum qualifications may not be selected for an interview if there are other applicants with better qualifications or more relevant experience.  The City conducts an "Oral Board Examination" as part of the recruiting process.  This consists of a panel interview, generally with three or four panelists who are subject matter experts for the position being filled.  Each applicant is asked the same questions and is given a numerical score.  In order to be placed on an Eligibility List, you must receive a score of 70% or higher on your Oral Board Examination.

What happens if I receive a passing score on my Oral Examination?

At the conclusion of the oral exam process, Human Resources will certify an Eligibility List and forward it to the department.  The department will then conduct final face-to-face interviews.  If there is one opening, Human Resources will send the top three candidates from the oral exam for this final interview.

How does an Eligibility List work?

You cannot be hired for a position at the City of Corona unless your name is on an Eligibility List.  Keep in mind that being on the Eligibility List does not, in any way, guarantee you will be hired. Instead, the List determines the order in which the hiring department will conduct final interviews for a position.  The length of time that an Eligibility List remains valid will vary depending on the wishes of the department director.  An Eligibility List will no longer be valid if fewer than three names remain.  It is the applicant's responsibility to keep Human Resources informed of any changes in address or telephone number as long as his or her name remains on the list.
