Reference: Two Arrested in Copper Wire Thefts

On 3-04-13, at about 8:00 a.m., a citizen reported he was following a vehicle that was pulling wire from the city street lights in the 700 block of Mandevilla Way, Corona. Two suspects, later identified as Sean Kennedy (aka Sean Connolly), 41 years of Riverside, and Justin Howard 33 years of Corona, abandoned their vehicle and fled into a greenbelt area. A perimeter was established and a few minutes later both suspects were seen in the area of Corona Ave. and the I-15. Kennedy was detained at that location without incident. Howard fled into a dense stand of trees adjacent to the freeway. An extensive hour long search of the area by personnel from patrol, traffic, and the detective bureau ended with negative results. A few minutes after the search was called off, a citizen on the other side of the freeway, reported that Howard was at her residence asking to charge his cellphone. He was taken into custody without incident.

Public works was notified and they identified the wire as being stolen from Mandevilla yesterday and other Corona sites over the weekend for a total loss of approximately $6,000. Detectives were notified and conducted extensive interviews with the suspects who made admissions to stealing wire. Detectives found that the suspects had recently recycled more than 1000 lbs. of copper wire in surrounding cities.
