Frequently Asked Questions

  1. May I submit a resume instead of an application?

No. You must turn in a fully completed and signed City application. You may submit a resume and/or cover letter as an addition to your application if desired. However, do not write "see resume" on the application if you choose to submit additional materials. The application must be fully completed with no blank spaces. The application must be able to stand alone.

  2. Can I apply online?

Yes. The City's website is http://www.discovercorona.org. Follow the link on that page to apply online. You will receive a confirmation number when you have finished filling out your application. Please make a note of that number.

  3. What if I am interested in a particular position, but I don't see an opening for it at the Human Resources Department? Can I just turn in an application anyway?

No. We are able to accept applications only for positions that are currently open. If you are interested in a job for which there is no opening you may fill out an Interest Card. When an opening becomes available, we will send the card to you so you can apply. Interest cards are kept on file for one year.

  4. I am looking at job flyers in Human Resources and I see two positions for which I feel I am qualified. May I apply for both? What is the procedure?

Yes. You may apply for more than one position at a time. If you do, please remember that you will need to fill out a separate, original City application for each position.

  5. How will I find out the status of my application?

The Human Resources Department will notify each applicant in writing about the status of his or her application. Generally, this will take place approximately two weeks after the closing date for the position.

  6. May I fax my application?

No. Only original documents are valid; faxes or photocopies are not acceptable.

  7. If I mail my application on the closing date, is that OK?

Postmarks are not accepted. Human Resources must receive applications by 5:30 p.m. on the closing date. We will stamp each application with the time and date we receive it. In order to be fair to all applicants, we cannot make any exceptions to this rule.

  8. How do interviews work at the City of Corona?

Once a position closes, a Human Resources Analyst and the hiring department will review all of the applications. Since the number of interview slots is limited, only the most qualified applicants can be selected. That is, an applicant who meets all of the minimum qualifications may not be selected for an interview if there are other applicants with better qualifications or more relevant experience. The City conducts an "Oral Board Examination" as part of our recruiting process. This consists of a panel interview, generally with three or four panelists who are subject matter experts for the position being filled. We call it an Oral Examination because it is actually an oral test. That is, each applicant is asked the same questions and is given a numerical score. In order to be placed on an Eligibility List, you must receive a score of 70% or higher on your Oral Board Examination.

  9. What happens next if I receive a passing score on my Oral Examination?

At the conclusion of the Orals process, Human Resources will certify an Eligibility List and forward it to the department where the opening exists. That department will then conduct final face-to-face interviews. If there is one opening, HR will send the top three candidates from the orals for this final interview.

  10. How does an Eligibility List work?

You cannot be hired for a position at the City of Corona unless your name is on an Eligibility List. Keep in mind that your being on the list does not in any way guarantee that you will be hired. Instead, the list determines the order in which the hiring department will conduct final interviews for a position. The length of time that an Eligibility List remains valid will vary depending on the wishes of that department's Director. An eligibility list will no longer be valid if fewer than three names remain. It is the applicant's responsibility to keep Human Resources informed of any changes in address or telephone number as long as his or her name remains on the list.
